Do you want to avoid joint pain this monsoon? Follow these 4 important strategies and take complete care of your joints during the rainy season
Many people face joint problems during the monsoon season such as chronic joint pain, arthritis, muscle pain, osteoarthritis and joint pain and stiffness. Several factors can affect joint pain during monsoon such as humidity, moisture level and atmospheric pressure.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Pramod Bhor, Director, Orthopaedics and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon at Fortis Hospital, Vashi, explained, “When there is a change in weather or heavy rainfall, the atmospheric pressure drops significantly. When your body recognises and decodes these changes, it leads to inflammation and swelling in your soft tissues, causing fluid to expand in your joints. This expansion can happen around your joints which can easily irritate and inflame your nerves, resulting in intense pain around your joints.”
Tips to Control Joint Pain During Monsoon
- Stay Warm: Monsoon season brings sudden fluctuations in temperature, which can affect joint health. Atmospheric pressure directly triggers intense joint and muscle pain during the rainy season. It is important to stay warm and comfortable when the weather is unpredictable, dress yourself in full-sleeved t-shirts and long pants along with warm socks and gloves. Taking regular hot baths can also provide relief from joint pain during the rainy season.
- Keep your body moving: Not engaging in exercise or physical activities throughout the day can lead to joint pain, making them stiff and painful during the monsoon. Therefore, it becomes important to maintain your mobility by engaging in physical activities or exercises such as yoga, meditation, running, long walks, workouts, swimming, and cycling.
- eating healthy food: Eating healthy food can be beneficial to overcome joint problems during the monsoon season. Try to eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants, vitamin E and nutrients as these properties help reduce inflammation and gradually reduce pain. Drinking warm vegetable soup can be beneficial not only for your overall health but also for your joints.
- Do not ignore the pain: People often ignore their pain and think of it as a normal pain that will subside on its own after some time. This can make your symptoms worse and increase the pain. Therefore, when the pain becomes unbearable and persists for more than a week, it is important to consult your doctor immediately to avoid further complications.
