The Labour Party has returned to power after 14 years after losing more than 200 seats to the Tories led by Rishi Sunak in the recent U.K. elections. The former Indian-origin prime minister apologised to the public and took responsibility for the defeat in his last address from No. 10, Downing Street. But there are several major factors that contributed to the downfall of the Tories in the U.K.
“I would first like to say to the country that I am sorry,” Sunak said outside the prime minister’s residence at Downing Street yesterday.
The Conservative Party’s historic tenure has seen five prime ministers – including Liz Truss’s disastrous 49-day tenure – a global pandemic and even Brexit.

3. Citizens are not satisfied with Great Britain’s National Health Services (NHS). Satisfaction levels began to decline significantly during Conservative rule in 2020, after the country’s first year of Covid lockdowns.
4. The number of immigrants is expected to increase after Brexit. In 2023, the net migration number reached 6,85000. This is reported to be the highest since 2010. In May 2024, Rishi Sunak promised that there would be no deportation flights to Rwanda before July 4. The deportations take place under the UK Rwanda Asylum Scheme, an immigration policy under which people identified by the UK as illegal immigrants will be relocated to Rwanda.
5. Legal aid has been under-compensated, which has increased the timelines for each case. As a result, victims lose confidence and withdraw from the legal process.
6. The cost of living has risen significantly, as interest rates in the UK are at their highest in 15 years. According to a chart Guardian, Over 3 million food packages were distributed by food banks.
7. Meanwhile, The Independent quoted experts as saying that Sunak made too many promises and didn’t deliver, leading to his biggest failure., He promised to present a manifesto by 2019, which was, in reality, impossible given England’s financial situation.

Meanwhile, newly-elected Labour minister Keir Starmer is due to take office today, and has pledged to “rebuild Britain” after his party’s landslide victory ended 14 years of Conservative rule.
“The work of change begins today,” Starmer posted on X, along with a photo of him and his wife at 10 Downing Street.
The Labour Party’s policies are described as ‘progressive realism’, aimed at tackling global challenges.
