Whose fault was it – IndiGo’s haste in landing or AI’s delay in takeoff?

Mumbai Airport: Two planes flying at a speed of about 240 kilometers per hour suddenly came on the same runway. Before the two planes could collide, one plane took off in the air and the lives of hundreds of passengers were saved by a gap of a few seconds. This incident happened at Mumbai airport at around 6 am on Saturday. After coming to know about this incident, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has started investigating the entire matter.

According to sources, this investigation of DGCA is based on three aspects. First- Air India pilot delayed the takeoff. Second- Indigo pilot hurried in landing. Third- Air Traffic Control (ATC) made a mistake in calculating the landing-takeoff time gap between the two flights. Now the truth about who made the real mistake among these three will be known only after the DGCA investigation report comes out. Currently, DGCA has taken possession of the conversation between the two pilots and ATC.

Is it right or wrong for two planes to land on the same runway?
According to aviation experts, it is a common practice for aircrafts to land and take off from the same runway. Yes, in view of safety, ATC maintains a proper time gap between the two aircrafts. It is the practice at all busy airports of the world including Mumbai airport that as soon as the tyres of an aircraft leave the runway, a few seconds later, the landing aircraft touchdown on the runway. This time gap between takeoff and landing at Mumbai airport is about 40 to 45 seconds. That is, every 45 seconds, one aircraft takes off and the other aircraft lands.

Around 900 aircrafts operate daily
Talking about the data of April 2024, a total of 26870 aircrafts operated in a month at Mumbai Airport. These include 6978 international and 19892 domestic aircrafts. The movement of these 26870 aircrafts does not include the movement of unscheduled and cargo aircrafts. In this sense, about 896 passenger aircrafts operate from Mumbai Airport daily and the difference between the takeoff and landing of both the aircrafts is about 45 to 50 seconds. In such a situation, it is the primary responsibility of the Air Traffic Control to ensure that there is a correct distance between the aircrafts landing and taking off.

Air India flight AI-657 from Mumbai Airport to Trivandrum was about to take off from runway 27-9, when IndiGo flight 6E-5053 from Indore to Mumbai Airport landed on the runway before it. For a few seconds, both the aircraft were one after the other on the same runway. Before the two aircraft could get very close to each other, Air India’s aircraft took off and a major accident was averted by a gap of a few seconds.
