Becoming an IAS or IPS officer may seem like an interesting career, but cracking the UPSC exam requires a lot of hard work and the right approach. Every year, thousands of applicants take the UPSC Civil Services Exam, but only about a thousand of them manage to clear the prestigious exam in all three stages.

Some UPSC aspirants have modest financial means yet they work hard for the exam and become IAS, IPS or IFS officers. One such person is a hotel waiter before he cleared the UPSC CSE in his seventh attempt. His name is Jai Ganesh, IAS KK Jai Ganesh became an IAS officer after securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 156 in the 2008 UPSC exam.

Jayganesh was born and brought up in Vinavamangalam, a small village in Vellore district. His family was not very rich. His father worked in a leather factory. Somehow the family raised money for his education. Jayganesh’s father used to earn Rs 4,500 per month by working in the leather industry. Jayganesh was the eldest son in his family. Therefore, the responsibility of running the family expenses was also on him.

Jai Ganesh’s goal was to free his family from the shackles of poverty. He was an extremely bright student. Jai Ganesh did not give in to this situation even though the family’s financial condition was not good. To refocus his life and profession, he studied diligently.

Jai Ganesh received a scholarship to study and passed his 12th board exams with around 92 percent marks. After that, with the help of the scholarship he was able to enroll in a mechanical engineering course. After becoming an engineer, he started working for himself. Then he realized that many other families like his were also facing financial difficulties. He quit his job as an engineer and started training to become a collector to help his family and others.

To bear the expenses of coaching, Jayganesh worked as a waiter and prepared for the UPSC exam. After this, he enrolled in a coaching institute in Chennai. He did not have money to pay the fees. To bear his expenses and UPSC coaching fees, he also started working as a movie theater billing operator. There he got a salary of three thousand rupees per month. He did not succeed in the UPSC exam in 2004. After this, he left working in the movie theater.

Jai Ganesh was aware of the difficulty of the UPSC exam. It would require him to put in more study hours. However, he was unable to quit his job and focus only on his studies. So he started serving customers as a waiter in a restaurant, which gave him more time to study. Jai Ganesh failed in both his attempts in the UPSC preliminary examination. He then started teaching sociology at a coaching facility.

K Jaiganesh is a patient and intelligent student despite failing six times. He took the UPSC Civil Services Examination six times and failed every time. Despite this, he did not give up. He continued his preparation. Due to his diligent preparation, he managed to clear UPSC Mains, UPSC Interview and UPSC Prelims in his seventh attempt in the exam. He reached the 156th rank and was appointed as an IRS officer. He is currently serving as Additional CIT (OSD) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry region.
