Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK on Wednesday once again pitched for scrapping of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, saying it was the only solution to prevent suicide by students and incidents of fraud like impersonation. Dravidian party’s Tamil mouthpiece “Murasoli” said in an editorial that 26 people have lost their lives so far due to NEET in Tamil Nadu and the party has consistently said that the exam is “an altar on which lives are lost.” The ruling party’s daily claims that a total of 119 students undergoing coaching to crack NEET have died by suicide in the last eight years. Furthermore, it states that last year alone 24 candidates ended their lives and the “Rajasthan State Government” itself had disclosed this information.
Providing year-wise data on suicides of students enrolled in coaching centers in Rajasthan, Murasoli, in an article dated May 15, said deaths due to NEET continue. Citing specific incidents of NEET-related fraud and irregularities in states including Gujarat, Bihar, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, the DMK asked if this was not a betrayal of nearly 24 lakh candidates.
“Abolishing NEET is the only solution to prevent suicide by students and incidents involving cheating (to pass the exam illegally),” the editorial said. Such incidents highlighted include the alleged impersonation of a second year MBBS student in Maharashtra and some students from a center in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur leaving the examination hall early to allegedly impersonate others still at the same centre. The candidates writing the answers can be helped.
This week alone, 24 people (eleven students and 13 others who were invigilators, and parents) have been arrested in Patna, Delhi, Rajasthan and Jharkhand in connection with the NEET question paper leak, the DMK daily said.
