Three days after Earth was hit by a powerful solar storm on May 10, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) released its observations of the geomagnetic phenomenon from various angles, including from its solar mission, Aditya L1. It was the most powerful solar storm to hit Earth in decades and was classified as a G5 level storm on the geomagnetic scale.
ISRO revealed the India-related impacts of the solar storm and said that because India is at a lower latitude, it did not report widespread damage like other areas in the Pacific and Americas.
“The Indian region was less affected as the main impact of the storm occurred on the morning of May 11, when the ionosphere was not fully developed. Also, being at lower latitudes, large-scale power outages have not been reported in India. “The ionosphere was very disturbed over the Pacific and American regions,” the space agency said in a statement.
What did Aditya L1 capture?
India’s first solar mission, Aditya L1, successfully launched on September 2 carrying seven different payloads designed for detailed study of the Sun. The mission consists of two subsystem instruments – the Solar Wind Ion Spectrometer (SWIS) and STEPS (Supra Thermal and Energetic Particle Spectrometer).

“SWIS has captured the surge of alpha particle and proton fluxes of the solar wind as a signature of this solar outburst event. “STEPS measures solar wind ion flux across seven energy ranges and observed a steady increase in energetic ion flux during the event,” ISRO said.
“The X-ray payloads on-board Aditya-L1 (SolexS and HEL1OS) have observed several . “The events occurred as it passed through the L1 point,” the space agency said.
What did Chandrayaan-2 capture?
India’s second Moon mission, which did not meet its mission objective, has a functioning orbiter, which has captured the signatures of these solar outburst events from the lunar polar orbit.
“Large solar flares, which appear as spikes, were autonomously detected by XSM’s onboard logic when internal mechanisms were activated to reduce the incident X-ray flux by bringing a filter in front of the detector , so as to prevent its saturation. , While XSM primarily monitors solar Said.

“The ULD incident light curve over the past five days, shown in the figure, clearly shows an increase in the local charged particle concentration since May 9. “The observed degradation in the XSM ULD light curve is due to shadow effects arising from the spacecraft’s orbit around the Moon,” the space agency said.
