Shekhar Suman says Raj Kapoor also had anger problems
When Shekhar was asked about Sanjay’s angry nature, he said, “So what? How does it matter? He has every right to be. Why does he get angry? He is not crazy. He is a perfectionist. You will notice that perfectionists are always short-tempered because they become impatient with everyone else for not being at their level. The actor further added, “I know many people who are great in their craft but are also short-tempered. K Asif, Mehboob Khan and Raj Kapoor were all like this. So, it doesn’t matter. This is all fair. In fact, I would say to him (Bhansali), ‘Aur gussa karo’ (get even more angry). See what he is creating not only for you but for the future generation as well.”
Shekhar plays the character of Nawab Zulfikar in Heeramandi. The show also features Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Sharmin Segal, Fardeen Khan and Farida Jalal in crucial roles. Shekhar’s son Adhyayan Suman also essays Nawab Zoravar in the series. Heeramandi will be streaming on Netflix India from May 1.
Interestingly, Shekhar was also approached to play the role of Chunari Babu in Bhansali’s 2002 blockbuster period epic Devdas, but the actor could not play the role due to his busy schedule. Ultimately its character was played by Jackie Shroff.
Ranbir Kapoor calls Sanjay Leela Bhansali a hard task master
Concerns about the Heeramandi director’s anger spread on social media after Ranbir Kapoor talked about it on a talk show with Neha Dhupia. He said, “He (Sanjay) was a tough task-master and I was sitting on my knees on the set, he was beating me. After a time it became so heavy and I felt so tortured that at one time I had to leave the film. Had to leave. I think I had been in my job 10 or 11 months and I said, ‘Listen, I can’t do this, it’s taking a toll on me.’
Ranbir first worked with Bhansali as an assistant director on the 2005 film Black, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee. He later started his acting career in 2007 with Bhansali’s film Saawariya opposite Sonam Kapoor.
