Although there is no clarity on the release of Monkey Man in India, its release on video-on-demand platforms in the US has gone down. As a result, pirated versions of the film reached the internet. Indian audiences took that route amid uncertainty over its official release in the country.
Incidentally, Indian audiences got to watch Monkey Man on Tuesday, April 23, not only on Dev Patel’s birthday but also on Hanuman Jayanti. This film is heavily inspired by Indian mythological characters.
“Dude, everyone has Monkey Man Link except me,” one user wrote on Twitter. Another posted, “Dev Patel’s girls will say he is the mastermind behind releasing Monkey Man link on Hanuman Jayanti.” The third post read, “#MonkeyMan torrent is going to break records in India. Yes? No?”
about monkey man
The action thriller follows the journey of a young man, portrayed by Dev Patel, who sets out on a mission to seek justice for his mother’s death caused by corrupt politicians. However, his quest for vengeance takes an unexpected turn as he becomes a champion for the oppressed and powerless, and transforms into the titular Monkey Man.
Along with Dev, the film stars Sikander Kher, Sharlto Copley, Shobhita Dhulipala, Makrand Deshpande, Ashwini Kalsekar and others. Notably, Dev Patel not only directs and stars in the film, but also serves as a producer alongside Jordan Peele.
Among those praising the film was actor Priyanka Chopra, who shared a clip of Monkey Man on her Instagram Stories earlier this month. Sharing the video, she captioned the post, “Bravo #DevPatel. What an impressive debut!”
Monkey Man premiered at SXSW and received a standing ovation, bringing Dev Patel to tears.
