need free space
To start a vermi compost unit, you must have free space. The place where you want to install vermi compost unit should not be filled with water due to rain or any other reason. To start a vermicompost unit, you will need animal dung, earthworms, polythene seat and paddy straw or any other straw that can cover the dung. You can easily get cow dung for free from any cow shed or animal dairy. You just have to bring him from there.
how to start
Cover the place where you want to make vermi compost from all sides so that animals cannot come there. Bring a long polythene seat from the market. Cut it into 2 meter width and length as per your space. Level the ground and spread this seat on it. Now apply a layer of cow dung on it. After this, scatter earthworms on it and then add cow dung. Do not keep the height of cow dung more than 1.5 feet.
After doing all this, cover it well with paddy straw or any other grass. Maintain constant moisture content in cow dung. Apart from this, do not spray any kind of pesticide on it and do not allow snakes and rats to come on it. Earthworms will convert cow dung into vermi compost in about two months. When the compost is ready, filter it and separate the earthworms from it.
how much will it cost
You can start vermi compost business by investing Rs 50 thousand. In this, the maximum expenditure is on earthworms. Earthworms are available for around Rs 1000 per kg. But the special thing is that earthworms grow very fast and they double in number in about three months. Therefore, if you buy earthworms once and expand your business further, you will not need to buy earthworms. Apart from earthworms, you will also have to buy cow dung, plastic seat and paddy straw. Since these things are not very expensive, you will not have to spend much on them.
