History:
In 2012, the United Nations officially declared March 21 every year as World Down Syndrome Day. The date was chosen keeping in mind the 21st chromosome which is responsible for causing Down syndrome. Since then, this special day is celebrated every year on 21st March.
Importance:
The day is celebrated to raise awareness about the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome. It also emphasizes the need for and support from families and friends to help people with Down syndrome feel included. On this day, stereotypes and stigmas associated with the condition are challenged. World Down Syndrome Day also celebrates the achievements and contributions of people with Down syndrome in promoting independence and purpose.
