Riding waves of iconic nostalgia, Popeye keeps going back for more. The courageous foster-gulper who raised generations of children became one of the very few cartoon characters who inspired them to do what their parents could not achieve despite constant nagging – Eating green food, ready to do a big -cartoon-life soon.
Beginning a pioneer life, the unforgettable fictional character first appeared in the King Features comic strip Thimble Theater in the 1920s. She is now riding the wave of the upcoming live-action film Flood. Earlier this week, a Teen Titans live-action film was also confirmed to be in production. Popeye appears to be joining the ranks of ambitious projects already underway.
What we know so far about the Popeye live-action movie
Calling it an ambitious project is apt at this point as the Popeye film (in development) is being touted as a “big budget feature”. Chernin Entertainment and King Features are teaming up for the mod remake. Reportedly, screenwriter Michael Caleo has joined the project. He is known for The Sopranos (1999), The Family (2013) and Sexy Beast (2024).
The new-age rendition of the cartoon figure isn’t the first time he’s come to life on screen. Famous Hollywood star Robin Williams led the film of the same name in 1980, with Shelley Duvall playing his love interest Olive Oyl. Directed by Robert Altman, the film was produced under the joint banner of Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions with a budget of $20 million.

Modern-day audiences may recognize Superman, Iron Man, Batman, Wonder Woman or Jean Gray as their superheroes, but an entire segment of humble origins grew up with Popeye. The iconic sailor getting his superpowers from green vegetables was an added quirk that many parents still thank to this day for encouraging healthy patterns of eating habits. News of the Popeye movie comes at an even more special time in the character’s history as he celebrates his 95th birthday since he first appeared in the 1929 comic. His crazy fan-following spans generations, and that translated to how some fans released unofficial trailers in December 2023 imagining Dwayne Johnson as their own Popeye the Sailor. However, official casting announcements are still a leap that needs to be made, but only after a studio is attached to the project’s title.
