Oscars 2024: Anticipating protests at the Academy Awards over the Israel-Hamas war, Los Angeles Police will increase their presence on Sunday night to avoid disrupting the Oscars ceremony. The New York Times, citing the Los Angeles Police Department, reported that at least one group “would like to stop the Academy Awards”. Security will be tightened outside the Oscar ceremony venue
“It will be our goal to ensure that the Academy Awards is a success, that guests can safely arrive and enter the venue. But, at the same time, we’re going to work very hard to liaise with the groups as they show up, and hopefully we’re here to support your First Amendment constitutional rights as police,” Commander Randy Goddard said.
While some groups may attempt to block traffic or use other disruptive measures, others may protest close to the Dolby Theatre, where the Oscars take place. Police said they would “deploy more resources” to “help facilitate” any protests. They will not allow protesters to break the law or prevent guests from getting to the Oscars safely.
“We hope he finds a middle ground. My objective is to get the guests inside the venue safely,” the commander said. Police said the Dolby Theater secured by the academy has railings, fences, posts and about 2,000 private security guards.
Ukraine war could also be the reason for the protest
According to the AP, the war in Ukraine will be on the minds of some attendees, especially Mstislav Chernov, the journalist filmmaker behind his favorite documentary, 20 Days in Mariupol. With the presidential election in full swing, politics can be an unavoidable topic despite awards season being largely played in a vacuum.
The move comes after a few dozen pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated outside the Crypto.com Arena during the Grammys. They blocked traffic in the drop-off area.
