Population is considered a big problem in India. Most people believe that India does not have enough resources to meet the needs of its huge population. On the other hand, in all the developed countries of the world the population is limited and the standard of living of the people there is very good. Well, we are not getting into this debate now. Rather, let us discuss a news today. This news is from Ukraine. Here, after the start of the war with Russia, the population has decreased by about one crore in the last two and a half years. This has created an outcry in the entire world. Ukraine is a country where the birth rate is already at its lowest level. On an average, one child is born per woman here. That means the birth rate is one percent. Whereas to maintain the current status of population, minimum birth is required to be around 2.1 percent.
Florence Bauer, head of the UN Population Fund for Eastern Europe, told a conference in Geneva that the demographic situation in Ukraine is worsening after the start of the war with Russia in February 2022. He says that during this period the birth rate in Ukraine has come down to one percent. Ukraine, which came into existence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, had a population of five crore at that time. But, after that the population here is continuously decreasing. Actually, this problem has arisen in the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia adjacent to Ukraine. The population here is continuously decreasing.
census in ukraine in 2021
According to the report, a census was conducted in Ukraine in 2021 before the Russian attack. In his report it was found that the population of this country has decreased to four crores. Then after the Russian attack the situation here became worse. In the last two and a half years, the population here has decreased by another one crore. That means at present the population of Ukraine is about three crores. Which used to be Rs 5 crore about three decades ago.
There are many reasons for population decline due to war with Russia. According to reports, tens of thousands of people have been killed in this war. However, the Ukrainian government has never released any official data in this regard.
The biggest reason for population decline during this period is the migration of people from Ukraine. At present, about 67 lakh Ukrainians have taken refuge abroad, especially in Europe. Well, decreasing population is a big problem not only in Ukraine but also in Russia. There too the population has decreased after the war started. Before the war, Russia had a population of about 14 crores. Due to population decline, villages in Ukraine have become empty. Only the elderly are left in the houses. The young generation is rapidly fleeing the country. The houses are lying vacant. There is no one in the family to take care of each other.
